Lindsay Lohan never expected she’d return to a role she made famous as a teenager.
But here she is, 38 years old, back as Anna Coleman in the much-anticipated sequel Freakier Friday. The Freakier Friday film, set to release in 2025, reunites Lindsay Lohan with her on-screen mom Jamie Lee Curtis and brings a fresh twist to the body-swap classic.
Talking to ELLE magazine, Lohan said stepping back into Anna’s shoes was both unexpected and incredibly special. “I’m excited. It feels surreal. I never thought I would do a movie where there would be a sequel,” she admitted. “It’s something you don’t really think about. And then when you get to do it, and bring a character that you knew so well back to life, it’s exciting.”
She describes the process as comforting. Unlike the nerves of tackling a new role, reprising Anna gave her a sense of familiarity. “There’s a comfort with it that you don’t find in a new character. It’s evolved. What are they like now? How can we shoot it? So it felt really special,” she shared.
Even more meaningful was returning to Disney, where she first broke out in The Parent Trap. Lohan reflected on walking onto the lot again: “It felt really special, because I was 10 when I auditioned for The Parent Trap; now I’m 38. And to be back there at this time and have a full life and be able to share it with my husband and my son, it definitely feels unique.”
Now a wife and mom, Lohan feels like she’s bringing even more to the role this time around. Her son Luai, nearly 2 years old, and husband Bader Shammas are part of this new chapter. “It’s a really nice thing,” she said of getting to share the experience with her family.
Freakier Friday picks up years after the original, with Anna now a mother herself. She’s got a daughter and is about to have a step-daughter. When their families begin to blend, the fear sets in: could the same body-swap chaos happen again?
“It’s easygoing,” Lohan said about making the movie. “I feel like everything felt at ease when we were making it, and I feel that’s the best way to describe how I felt when I watched it. It felt easy and fun, and fresh at the same time.”
In a world full of high-stakes cinema, Lindsay Lohan believes the “Freakier Friday” film is exactly what audiences need. “There’s not a lot bringing me to the movie theatres personally right now. Freakier Friday is a feel-good movie, which is what I want to give people. And it’s fun.”
After seeing a second cut of the film, she confessed, “I wanted to get up and dance at the end. I was like, ‘Oh, this is cool. I like this song. I want people to do that.’”
Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the story, Freakier Friday promises a mix of nostalgia, laughs, and heart.
