A villager, identified as 32-year-old Vallabhaneni Gopala Rao, who reportedly tried to escape from police during a raid, in Royyuru village, drowned in Krishna River.

On a tip-off, that some villagers were gambling in the island villages in Krishna River, the Thotlavallur police on Friday, conducted a raid and tried to arrest the gamblers.

In a bid to escape from the police, two persons — Gopala Rao and Venkateswara Rao — reportedly jumped into Krishna River to escape from the police.

Venkateswara Rao swam to the shore safely, while Gopala Rao, of Madduru village drowned. Five other gamblers managed to escape into the island habitations.

The villagers retrieved the body and shifted it to the Government Hospital mortuary for postmortem.

However, Thotlavallur SI Ch. Avinash said that Gopala Rao, who went for fishing drowned in Krishna River. The body was handed over to the family members after postmortem, he said.

“Following a complaint lodged by victim’s wife V. Sowjanya, a case has been registered under Section 194 (Suspicious death) of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and investigation is on,” Mr. Avinash told The Hindu on Sunday.
