Matthew McConaughey is in talks to step into the role of hard-boiled detective Mike Hammer in an upcoming film from Skydance.

The 55-year-old actor, known for roles in True Detective, Dallas Buyers Club, and Interstellar, is circling the lead role in a new adaptation of the iconic detective book series created by Mickey Spillane.

The film’s script is written by True Detective mastermind Nic Pizzolatto, reuniting him with McConaughey for the first time since their acclaimed HBO series debuted in 2014. Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger are producing the film alongside Guymon Casady of Entertainment 360, Benjamin Forkner of Pendleton, and Ken F. Levin.

Mike Hammer first appeared in Spillane’s 1947 novel I, the Jury and quickly became one of the most influential private detective characters in American fiction. Over the decades, he’s appeared in 22 novels, with the franchise taken over by Max Allan Collins after Spillane’s death. The most recent book, Baby, It’s Murder, was released earlier this year and is considered the final entry in the series.

Hammer’s tough-guy persona and violent sense of justice helped inspire characters like Dirty Harry, Jack Reacher, and James Bond. Bringing him back to life on the big screen with someone like McConaughey could give the gritty detective a fresh modern take.

The script’s development under Pizzolatto has already sparked curiosity. Known for his dense, character-driven writing style, Pizzolatto hinted in a recent podcast that he’s also got ideas for revisiting the world of True Detective. Speaking on Tim Green’s Nothing Left Unsaid podcast, he revealed that he’s discussed reuniting McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as Rust Cohle and Marty Hart.

“I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that, who knows, maybe we’ll do it one day,” he said. He added that he’s not rushing to develop it, nor is he sharing the concept publicly. “If I said something on your show, there would be like five spec scripts going around Hollywood.”

While fans would love to see a True Detective sequel with the original cast, the Mike Hammer project looks like it’s moving forward faster. It would mark a return to the noir-heavy crime genre for both McConaughey and Pizzolatto, with a legacy character that fits their style perfectly.

No release date has been set yet, but with the creative team in place and McConaughey potentially locked in, this could shape up to be one of the most anticipated crime thrillers in years. Keep an eye out for casting confirmations and production updates soon.
