McDonald’s is throwing it way back, and this time, it’s not just for kids.
Starting August 12, the fast food giant is unleashing a full-blown nostalgia bomb with a brand-new adult Happy Meal called the McDonaldland Meal, and it’s bringing back a whole crew of beloved characters from the golden age of McDonald’s marketing. Think Hamburglar, Birdie, Mayor McCheese, the Fry Guys, and of course, Grimace. Yes, Grimace is back again after his purple reign of viral fame, and now he’s got company.
It’s the first time in two decades that all these iconic McDonaldland characters are being featured together in a campaign, and Gen Z, Gen X, and honestly anyone who grew up eating nuggets and watching trippy McDonald’s commercials is about to eat it up, literally. The new McDonaldland Meal will come with your choice of a Quarter Pounder with Cheese or a 10-piece Chicken McNuggets, plus fries, a collectible tin filled with retro goodies like postcards and stickers, and a brand-new Mt. McDonaldland Shake. The flavor? Total mystery. You’re supposed to guess it, and you already know TikTok’s gonna go wild trying.
“Over the past few years we’ve seen how fans flock to our characters, everyone from Grimace to the Hamburglar,” said Jennifer “JJ” Healan, McDonald’s VP of U.S. marketing, brand, content & culture. “But many, especially the new generation, don’t know that’s just the tip of the iceberg. It’s a chance for us to give fans a new, modern way to experience this magical world.”
The McDonald’s ad universe used to be an actual fever dream. First launched in 1971, the McDonaldland campaign introduced fans to a surreal world filled with Apple Pie Trees, Hamburger Bushes, and characters like Captain Crook and Officer Big Mac. And while those last two won’t be joining the comeback (nor will Ronald’s dog Sundae), we’re getting a solid lineup of core favorites in this new revival.
The hype doesn’t stop at the meals either. McDonald’s is also dropping exclusive McDonaldland-themed merch in partnership with Pacsun, launching the same day as the meal, August 12. Expect stuff like shirts, hats, and even luggage tags that scream retro fast food chic. And if you’re still craving more, another merch line with Away drops on August 18, adding a premium twist to the whole rollout.
The return of McDonaldland is clearly McDonald’s latest move to connect with customers who grew up loving these characters and are now old enough to feel a deep, nostalgic attachment to them. And let’s be real, it’s working. Grimace went viral without even trying, and this bigger, character-stuffed campaign is shaping up to be another massive moment.
There’s just something about that combination of comfort food and childhood memories that hits every time. Whether you’re curious about the mystery shake flavor or just want to collect every tin in the set, the McDonaldland Meal is about to become the must-try fast food moment of the year.
