Minister for Higher Education Govi. Chezhiaan on Thursday hit out at Governor R.N. Ravi over a reported farewell accorded to Vice-Chancellor of Periyar University R. Jagannathan, who has been facing corruption charges.
In a statement, Mr. Chezhiaan said it was condemnable that the farewell was accorded on the Raj Bhavan campus. Mr. Chezhiaan hit out at the Governor for having accorded farewell to an individual who was not only facing charges, but failed to cooperate with the investigation.
He recalled that Mr. Jagannathan was arrested on charges of abusing a person by calling him with his caste name. “By not only giving an extension after the end of his tenure, but according a farewell to him in the Raj Bhavan, the Governor has lost his standing to remain the Chancellor…,” he said.
By according a farewell to someone, who acted against the DMK government and spreading religious comments, the Governor brought disrepute to his post and has set a bad precedent, Mr. Chezhiaan said.
The Minister further said that the Governor had humiliated Tamil Nadu by such action.
