Middlesbrough are on the lookout for a new manager this summer after they failed to get into at least the play-offs despite a promising run in their 2024/25 campaign.

Michael Carrick was sacked by Middlesbrough earlier today after a tenure of nearly three years at the helm of the Tyneside club.

Boro’s aims are clear after they have finished 7th, 4th, 8th and 10th in their last four seasons in the Championship.

They aren’t quite progressing as much as the bosses would like with a strong side each season but not quite enough to be amongst the play-offs or promotion talks by the end of the campaigns.

Ex-Premier League boss Rob Edwards has emerged as the big favourite after doing wonders with Luton Town from 2022 to now, despite their somewhat inevitable relegation from the top-flight this season.

Appointed in November 2022, Edwards having just recently been let go by Watford, steered the club to win the Championship play-off final.

That was considered a remarkable achievement with the squad they had at the time finishing 3rd place behind Burnley and Sheffield United.

They did return to the Championship the season after with the squad lacking to keep up with the demand of the Premier League on a much smaller budget than all of their rivals.

However, with another relegation they now face a tough challenge to get out of League One and back into contention with a combination of losing top players and poor performances.

But Edwards has proven he can take teams up in the Championship and that has got to appeal to Boro who possess the potential.

Cooper is a close second favourite though and could be a huge coup for Middlesbrough.

Cooper performed great things with Nottingham Forest in the Championship and deserves to be considered after a tough time in the Premier League with both them and Leicester City subsequently.

But the football betting market is still wide open with three more potential candidates less than double digits in the prices.
