A police team and officers of the Forest Department in Mudigere taluk of Chikkamagaluru district in Karnataka rescued 10 students from Chitradurga who were stranded in a forest after getting lost at night during a trekking expedition on June 9.
The students began the expedition from the Didape route in Dakshina Kannada district and reached Bandaje waterfall. Then, they turned towards Rani Jhari, but lost their way. They were stranded in the forest late in the evening. As it was getting dark, they could not proceed further.
After repeated efforts, they managed to contact the police and forest officers by phone. A team of officials and local people looked for the trekkers and found them in the early hours of June 10.
The students were sent back to Chitradurga.
The rescue team included Balur Police Sub-Inspector Dileep Kumar, staff members of the Forest Department, and Arif, a resident of Kottigehara.
On May 27, Chikkamagaluru Superintendent of Police Vikram Amathe had issued a detailed advisory note to tourists visiting the district in view of heavy rains in the district. Among other things, he had suggested that visitors avoid water bodies and be careful while driving vehicles in heavy rains.
The SP had advised tourists to call helpline number 112 in case of emergency.
