Senior Congress leader K. Sudhakaran on Tuesday dismissed concerns over former MLA P.V. Anvar’s dissatisfaction with the United Democratic Front’s (UDF) candidate selection for the Nilambur byelection, asserting that Mr. Anvar’s possible solo contest will not impact the UDF’s prospects.

Mr. Sudhakaran clarified that though Mr. Anvar was upset over the nomination of Aryadan Shoukath, son of late Congress veteran Aryadan Muhammad, it would not jeopardise his relationship with the UDF.

“Anvar has his own opinions, but that is natural in politics. I had a detailed conversation with him on Monday night. He will continue to cooperate with the front,” he said.

Mr. Sudhakaran underscored that Mr. Shoukath’s candidature was “symbolic.”

“The legacy of Aryadan Muhammad resonates deeply in Malappuram. Honouring Shoukath is equivalent honouring Aryadan Muhammad. The decision to field Shoukath was made with this in mind,” he added.

He emphasised that there was no major rift and that the party was keen to ensure that Mr. Anvar’s concerns were addressed.

“We are interested in protecting Anvar’s interests as much as possible,” Mr. Sudhakaran said.
