Police to conduct probe into viral video despite father’s claim

The police have raised doubts over a father’s explanation in connection with the violent assault of his eight-year-old daughter in Cherupuzha, a case that came to light through a widely circulated video.

According to the police, the father claimed the video was staged as a prank intended to persuade his estranged wife to return, a statement which was supported by his children. However, the police have indicated that they are not fully convinced by this explanation and are preparing for a detailed probe.

The incident, which took place on May 19, triggered public outrage after disturbing footage surfaced in the media. The video shows the child being dragged by her hair and pleading for the ‘assault’ to stop.

The police have confirmed that the video was sent to the children’s mother. Following the incident, both children were placed under the care of the Child Welfare Committee.

The Child Rights Commission plans to record detailed statements from the children. The Commission has also recommended that a formal case be registered. Meanwhile, the children’s mother has filed a police complaint alleging that her daughter was subjected to severe abuse by the father.
