With rainfall expected to strengthen over Kerala over the next few days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed a number of districts on red alert for extremely heavy rainfall and several others on orange and yellow alerts for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Kannur and Kasaragod districts are on red alert on Saturday for extremely heavy rainfall (above 20 cm in 24 hours), according to a Friday night weather forecast update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Nine other districts – Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta – are on orange alert for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on saturday. Alappuzha, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram are on yellow alert for isolated heavy rainfall.
As per the 9 p.m. update, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod are on red alert on Sunday. These districts plus Idukki and Pathanamthitta are on red alert on Monday. The IMD is expected to update the forecasts on Saturday morning.
