REI is making big moves again with new REI openings just in time for summer adventures. The beloved outdoor retailer, often called the “best store ever” by its loyal fanbase, is launching three new stores across two major U.S. states.

Known for its high-quality outdoor gear and apparel, REI Co-op is locking in prime locations that bring them closer to the heart of outdoor recreation. Whether you’re into hiking, camping, cycling, climbing, or just love nature, this expansion is a win for outdoor lovers everywhere.

The three new stores are popping up in California and Colorado, a smart move considering both states are packed with scenic trails, climbing spots, and outdoor communities. The first new REI store will open in Chico, California, on June 20. That’ll be followed by a second California location in Elk Grove, which is about 15 miles south of Sacramento, opening its doors on July 25. Last but not least, Durango, Colorado, will welcome a brand-new REI in August.

Here’s a quick breakdown of where the new stores are landing:

Location Opening Date Store Address
Chico, California June 20, 2025 2101 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway
Elk Grove, CA July 25, 2025 Laguna Gateway Shopping Center, off Hwy 99 at Laguna Blvd & W. Stockton Blvd
Durango, Colorado August 2025 40 Turner Drive

These openings aren’t random. According to REI vice president Mary-Farrell Tarbox, the locations were carefully chosen based on their proximity to amazing outdoor spots and vibrant local recreation scenes. The goal? Be where REI fans already are, or where they dream of playing outside. And it makes sense. This strategy helps the brand stay close to the core of its community-focused values while giving customers easy access to everything they need for their next big adventure.

Each new REI store will feature the co-op’s classic setup, offering gear for all seasons and activities. In cooler areas, REI even includes ski and snowboard service shops, while year-round, customers can rely on full-service bike shops right inside. Whether you’re repairing your gear or gearing up from scratch, these new stores are made to deliver convenience.

REI, originally founded back in 1938 in Seattle, started as a small co-op among 23 climbing buddies looking for affordable gear. Now it’s a nationwide staple with nearly 200 stores and a massive reputation that rivals brands like North Face, Patagonia, and Dick’s Sporting Goods. And this expansion isn’t slowing down anytime soon. In addition to the three new stores set for this summer, REI has already opened a fresh location in Amherst, New York, and moved two of its older stores, one from Alderwood to Lynnwood, Washington, and another from Encinitas to Carlsbad, California earlier this year.

Looking ahead, REI also has plans to set up shop in Prosper, Texas, and St. George, Utah, sometime next year. Clearly, the brand is leaning into a strong growth strategy, bringing its well-loved products and services to even more corners of the country.

With summer practically here, these new store launches couldn’t come at a better time. Whether you’re stocking up on gear for a mountain escape, upgrading your hiking setup, or just craving a walk through what some fans call “outdoorsy heaven,” REI is gearing up to make your summer better.
