We caught up with Peruvian DJ and producer Renzo Zong, who’s currently riding a very different seasonal wave than most of the world.
While the Northern Hemisphere dives headfirst into summer parties and festival madness, Zong is slowing things down in Lima’s winter and using the quieter rhythm to recalibrate his creativity. Known for weaving ancestral textures with futuristic beats, his sound always balances deep-rooted energy with forward-thinking vibes. In this interview, Renzo Zong opens up about his current headspace, studio projects, his evolving energy, and the launch of his new label, Zompayra Records.
T.H.E – Hey Renzo, how’s life treating you as summer hits most of the world, but not Lima?
Renzo Zong – Hey! I’m good, thanks for asking. While everyone’s soaking up summer sun, we’re easing into winter over here in Lima. It brings a slower energy, but I actually love it for staying grounded and focused. I’m spending more time in the studio, diving into new ideas. It’s a more introspective season, which is helping me shape my next wave of sounds.
T.H.E – So you’re deep in studio mode. What projects are you working on right now?
Renzo Zong – Yeah, big time. I’m currently working on the second volume of my ‘Del Perú’ EP. It’s been really inspiring, digging into the roots while playing with new textures. There are a few shows potentially lining up, but right now I’m letting the music lead. That feels like the right move this season.
T.H.E – What’s a typical August vibe like for you? Do you travel or stay put?
Renzo Zong – It’s always a mix. I stay in the studio a lot, but I also like to sneak away on short trips, somewhere warm, with nature and good vibes. Those escapes feed the creative energy for sure.
T.H.E – How does summer, or in your case, the lack of it, influence your sound?
Renzo Zong – Seasons totally shape my music. Even though we’re in winter, I still get inspired by the summer energy I see around the world. My music shifts with that, lighter tones, more flow. I kind of follow the vibe, wherever it’s coming from.
T.H.E – Where do you usually go for that creative recharge?
Renzo Zong – Anywhere tropical, rivers, beaches, the jungle. Natural surroundings always bring clarity and rhythm. That tropical pulse shows up in my tracks whether I’m there physically or just imagining the vibe.
T.H.E – What energy are you bringing to dance floors this year?
Renzo Zong – This year, I’m leaning into something raw and hypnotic, tribal percussion, Spanish vocals, and rich, ethnic layers. Some tracks are darker and percussion-heavy, others feel more open and spacious, floating with pianos and deep atmospheres. I’m trying to strike that balance between minimalism and emotion.
Any plans to hit up festivals or live sets this season?
Not this time around. I’m focused on creating right now, but I do keep tabs on live sets and festivals happening around the world. That energy can still inspire you, even from a distance.
T.H.E – You mentioned new music and your EP. Anything else we should know about?
Renzo Zong- Yes! I’m really excited about this, there’s a new label in Peru called Zompayra Records that we just launched. We’ve got some music ready to go, and I can’t wait to share what we’ve been working on with everyone. It’s a fresh start, and it feels good to have a platform for more local voices and unique sounds.
T.H.E- Is there one track that feels like your personal summer anthem this year?
Renzo Zong – Definitely “Emoriô” by Maz, Antdot & Jéssica Gaspar. It’s got that alive feeling, rhythm, warmth, and something soulful that really connects. It’s got that summer spirit even if you’re in a hoodie and rain.
T.H.E – And finally, what’s one thing, personally or musically, you’re hoping for this season?
Renzo Zong – I just want to stay present. Enjoy the slower pace, stay open to the process, and let the music take me somewhere unexpected. That’s what I hope to carry through the rest of the year.
As Renzo Zong embraces the slower rhythm of Lima’s winter, he’s doubling down on his creativity with intention. With the next volume of Del Perú on the horizon and his label Zompayra Records taking shape, his sound is rooted yet evolving.
