Seeking repealing of four labour codes, several workers of different labour organisations staged a demonstration under the aegis of Joint Action Committee of Trade Unions (JCTU) in Hubballi on Tuesday.
The protestors, including factory workers, construction workers, midday meal workers, ASHAs and others, staged a demonstration in front of the Mini Vidhana Soudha in Hubballi and demanded repeal of the four labour codes which they said will push workers into neo-slavery.
Addressing the protestors, State secretary of CITU Mahesh Pattar warned that if the State and Union governments fail to fulfil the demands of the workers, including the repeal of the labour codes, then, the workers will be forced to call for nationwide strike on July 9.
Convenors of JCTU Ashok Barki, A.S. Peerzade, Gangadhar Badiger, Sharanu Gonawar, Deepa, Devaraj Kambali and others addressed the protestors and elaborated on the adverse effects of the labour codes and sought their immediate repeal.
They subsequently submitted memoranda addressed to Prime Minister and Chief Minister to the taluk officials.
The other demands of the workers include repeal of the order on increasing working hours to 12, fixation of minimum wages of ₹36,000, implementation of universal pension scheme with a minimum pension of ₹8,000, an immediate stop to privatisation and monetisation of PSUs, including scheme workers under the ambit of minimum wages and ensuring minimum support prices to all farm yields.
