The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) will inaugurate three newly renamed stands at Wankhede Stadium today at 4:30 pm, honouring Rohit Sharma, Ajit Wadekar, and Sharad Pawar for their contributions to Indian cricket.

The Divecha Pavilion Level 3 has been renamed the Rohit Sharma Stand, marking a tribute to India’s ODI captain at his home ground. The Grand Stand Level 3 will bear the name of former BCCI president Sharad Pawar, while Grand Stand Level 4 will be dedicated to Ajit Wadekar, the former India captain.

The decision was ratified during MCA’s 86th Annual General Meeting held last month.

Rohit, who made his Test debut in 2013 and became full-time India captain in 2022, joins a select group of legends —Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Vijay Merchant — who already have stands named after them at Wankhede. Under his leadership, India won the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy in March 2025. For Mumbai, he has played 46 first-class matches, 17 List A games, and 25 T20s.

Ajit Wadekar, a stylish No. 3 batter and one of India’s finest slip fielders, led India to historic overseas Test series wins in the West Indies and England in 1971. He played 37 Tests and 2 ODIs between 1966 and 1974 and made his first-class debut in 1958-59. He passed away in August 2018, aged 77.

Sharad Pawar, a long-time administrator, served as BCCI president from 2005 to 2008 and played a key role in bringing the 2011 World Cup to India.
