Sabrina Carpenter has finally addressed the ongoing buzz around her breakup with Barry Keoghan, but in her usual style, keeping things vague while letting fans speculate.
The 26-year-old singer appeared on CBS Mornings on Aug. 29, where she was asked whether her music, particularly her emotional lyrics, reference her year-long romance with the Saltburn actor. Carpenter made it clear that she’s not here to give away the details.
“I just wouldn’t say,” Sabrina explained. “It’s more fun to picture the person in their head than the person I picture in my head, I think.”
Her answer comes months after the pair ended their relationship in December. At the time, Keoghan, 32, addressed online chatter himself, expressing frustration over fans dissecting his personal life. “I can only sit and take so much. My name has been dragged across the internet in ways I usually don’t respond to,” he wrote on X on Dec. 7. “It’s getting to a place where too many lines are being crossed.”
While Barry took the defensive approach, Sabrina is comfortable letting the speculation swirl. For her, writing about love is just part of the job. “I feel pretty transparent going into any of my relationships that I write songs,” the Manchild singer said. “Most of the time they have been pretty flattered when they get a song about them, good or bad. I think they’re just excited to get a shoutout.”
And she isn’t worried about scaring off future partners. “I’m not scared of men in that sense,” she shared. “I think I’ll attract exactly who I’m supposed to attract.”
Still, Sabrina admitted in past interviews that she prefers to protect the details of her private life. Speaking to Rolling Stone in June, she reflected on the pressures of being in the spotlight while navigating relationships as a young woman. “People underestimate how tricky it is,” she said. “If all of these people commenting had the same microscope on their lives, I don’t think they’d be as eloquently spoken as me.”
With her upcoming album already sparking speculation about hidden references, one thing is certain, Sabrina Carpenter knows how to let the music speak, even if she’s not naming names.
