Edmonton head into their second consecutive Stanley Cup Finals appearance looking to be crowned NHL champions for the sixth time, but for the first time since their run five Stanley Cups in seven years from 1984 to 1990.
With Stan Bowman as their new general manager following the departure of Ken Holland at the end of last season, the Oilers look to go one better than they went 12 months ago when they were beaten in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals to the very same opponents.
However, this time around, the Canadian side will have home-ice advantage in the series due to having the better regular season record, despite finishing third in the Pacific Division with a 49-29-5 record.
In the first round of the play offs, the Oilers defeated the LA Kings for a fourth consecutive season, before defeating division champion Vegas Golden Knights in five games, then defeating the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference final for the second consecutive season, again winning in five games.
For the second year in a row, Edmonton take on the Florida Panthers for the biggest prize in ice hockey, who will be partaking in their third consecutive and fourth overall Finals appearance.
The Panthers have won only one Stanley Cup in those appearances, coming last season in seven games despite winning the first three games of the season.
Bill Zito’s side finished in third place in the Atlantic Division during the regular season with a 47-31-4 record, and defeated Florida rivals the Tampa Bay Lightning in five games in the first round of the play offs.
Despite trailing 2-0 in the second round, the Panthers got past the Toronto Maple Leafs in seven games to set an Eastern Conference final against the Carolina Hurricanes, defeating them for the second time in three seasons, winning in five games.
This will be sixth consecutive Finals to feature a team from Florida, the first time since 2009 and the Finals will feature a rematch of the previous season, and the first time since 2-12 that neither team had home-ice advantage in the previous play-off rounds.
