Amazon Prime Video has confirmed that “The Summer I Turned Pretty” saga will be extended in the shape of a feature film, completing the beloved YA phenomenon in its last installment.
This comes after the series concluded its third and final season, which wrapped up TV adaptation of Jenny Han’s bestseller novels.
Although specific plot points are still under wraps, Amazon officially verified the film will continue after the series finale events. The original author of the book series, Jenny Han, and creative mind behind the TV adaptation, will pen the screenplay with Sarah Kucserka. The news broke at the show’s finale red carpet gala in Paris, France, much to the delight of fans clamoring for a conclusion.
In a statement, Han said, “There is one more big milestone remaining in Belly’s journey, and I felt only a film could do it the justice it deserves. I’m so thankful to Prime Video for keeping faith in my vision for this story and for enabling me to share this concluding chapter with the fans.”
The series has had no doubt left in its impact. Amazon released that Season 3 premiere attracted a staggering 25 million viewers worldwide in its first week. The show has been complimented on its combination of romance, nostalgia, and family relationships. Its official synopsis emphasizes the titular love triangle between Belly and the Fisher brothers, the changing dynamics between mothers and sons, and the long-lasting magic of female friendship, all within a coming-of-age story of first love, heartbreak, and one unforgettable summer.
Courtenay Valenti, Amazon MGM Studios’ head of film, streaming, and theatrical, and Vernon Sanders, Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios’ Global Head of Television, both welcomed the news. “‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ has resonated with fans around the world, crafting moments of happiness, nostalgia, and shared experience that have turned it into a worldwide phenomenon,” they stated. “We’re proud of the series’ extraordinary success and couldn’t be more excited to partner again with Jenny Han to bring fans an unforgettable next chapter.”
The cast ensemble, fronted by Lola Tung in Isabel “Belly” Conklin, has been the focus of the show’s success. Apart from new faces, returning stars include Jackie Chung, Christopher Briney, Gavin Casalegno, Rachel Blanchard, Sean Kaufman, and Rain Spencer among many others. Their acting has brought Han’s characters to life in a manner that struck a chord across different generations.
Behind the lens, Han reprises her double duty as writer and co-showrunner alongside Sarah Kucserka. They will also act as executive producers, with Karen Rosenfelt, Paul Lee, Hope Hartman, and Mads Hansen for wiip. The series, and now the film, continue to be co-productions of Amazon Studios and wiip, maintaining creative continuity.
With the news of the movie, “The Summer I Turned Pretty” fans can expect a conclusive ending that respects the spirit of Jenny Han’s novel. Although the series ending closed one door, the new movie will bring to life the emotional wrap-up and final milestone in the journey of Belly that fans have long been expecting.
