The cult classic comedy franchise “Super Troopers” is officially getting another chapter.

Searchlight Pictures has confirmed that “Super Troopers 3” is heading into production, with the beloved comedy troupe Broken Lizard returning to write, direct, and star in the film.

Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske – the five members of Broken Lizard – will reprise their roles while also handling the script. Chandrasekhar will once again direct, continuing his long-standing collaboration with producer Richard Perello and Searchlight Pictures.

Star-Studded Cast Joins the Lizard Patrol

Alongside the original cast, several familiar faces and new additions have joined the upcoming sequel. Brian Cox, best known for his Emmy-nominated role in HBO’s “Succession” and his previous appearances in the franchise, returns as Captain John O’Hagan. Marisa Coughlan also reprises her role as Ursula Hanson.

New cast members include Nat Faxon (“The Way Way Back”) as Captain Todd Markowski, Chace Crawford (“The Boys,” “Gossip Girl”) as Baker Buchanan, and Andrew Dismukes (“Saturday Night Live”) as Coy Burns.

Principal photography is set to begin this week, marking the official start of the third installment in the long-running comedy saga.

Searchlight Reunites with Broken Lizard

Searchlight Pictures president Matthew Greenfield praised the reunion, noting Broken Lizard’s enduring relationship with the studio.

“Broken Lizard has been part of the Searchlight family for over two decades, and we couldn’t be more thrilled for another entry in the ‘Super Troopers’ saga,” Greenfield said. “‘Super Troopers’ has a way of making the absurd feel inevitable, and we can’t wait to bring audiences along on another adventure with these characters who leave a trail of joy and laughter wherever they go.”

Jay Chandrasekhar echoed that excitement, saying, “Broken Lizard is excited to help bring theatrical comedy back. To America, we say, ‘It’s mustache-growing time!’”

A Comedy Legacy

The original “Super Troopers” was released in 2001 after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival. Distributed by Fox Searchlight, the film became a cult hit and won the Audience Award at South by Southwest. Its 2018 sequel, “Super Troopers 2,” also directed by Chandrasekhar, continued the franchise’s tradition of offbeat police comedy and fan-driven success.

In addition to the “Super Troopers” films, Broken Lizard has collaborated with Searchlight on other projects, including “Club Dread” and “Quasi.” The group also created cult favorites such as “Beerfest” and “The Slammin’ Salmon.” Heffernan and Lemme expanded their comedy reach further as creators and stars of TruTV’s hit firehouse sitcom “Tacoma FD.”

Brian Cox and Returning Stars

Brian Cox, a veteran of both “Super Troopers” and its sequel, brings gravitas and comedic timing to the franchise. Beyond Broken Lizard’s films, Cox’s career includes acclaimed performances in “The Ring,” “X2: X-Men United,” “Troy,” “The Bourne Supremacy,” and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.” His award-winning role in “Nuremberg” and Emmy-nominated performance as Logan Roy in “Succession” cemented his reputation as one of the industry’s most versatile actors.

Marisa Coughlan, another returning cast member, has starred in both earlier “Super Troopers” films. Her film credits include “Space Station 76,” “Already Dead,” “Teaching Mrs. Tingle,” and “Meet Bill.” She has also made television appearances in “Bones,” “Legacies,” “How to Be a Gentleman,” and “Man Up!”

New Faces in the Lineup

The addition of Nat Faxon brings an Academy Award winner into the fold – he previously co-wrote “The Descendants” with Alexander Payne and Jim Rash. Faxon’s directing and acting credentials, paired with his comedic timing, are expected to add new flavor to the franchise.

Chace Crawford, best known for his breakout role in “Gossip Girl” and his recent success in Amazon’s “The Boys,” adds star power and a younger demographic appeal. Meanwhile, comedian and writer Andrew Dismukes, a Primetime Emmy nominee for his work on “Saturday Night Live,” joins the cast as one of the fresh recruits in Broken Lizard’s comedic universe.

What Fans Can Expect

With filming now underway, anticipation for “Super Troopers 3” is building among fans who have embraced the series’ mix of absurd humor, quotable lines, and cult following. The franchise has always thrived on balancing slapstick antics with sharp satire, and the addition of new cast members signals that this third installment may push the comedy even further.

While no release date has been announced, “Super Troopers 3” is expected to bring fans back into the quirky world of misfit patrol officers with a blend of nostalgia and fresh laughs.

As Chandrasekhar and the Broken Lizard team teased: It’s officially mustache-growing season again.
