James Gunn has confirmed that he’s about to get his hands on The Batman: Part II script, and he couldn’t be more excited.

The DC Studios co-CEO recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly, where he praised Matt Reeves’ work and shot down any notion that the director’s project has lost relevance.

“What Matt’s doing is still really important, despite all stories to the contrary,” Gunn said. “We’re supposed to see that script shortly, and I can’t wait.”

The buzz around the sequel is starting to heat up again, especially after delays pushed the film back a year. Originally scheduled for release in October 2026, The Batman: Part II is now expected to hit theaters sometime in 2027. According to Gunn, that timeline isn’t unusual.

“To be fair, a 5 year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,” he wrote on Threads, pointing to examples like Aliens, Avatar, and Top Gun: Maverick as proof that great follow-ups take time.

Robert Pattinson, who will return as Bruce Wayne, poked fun at the long wait. Talking with his Mickey 17 co-star Naomi Ackie for Hero magazine, Pattinson joked, “I f****** hope so. I started out as young Batman and I’m going to be f****** old Batman by the sequel.”

While he may be aging, Pattinson says he’s in better shape than ever. Back in March, before turning 39 in May, he said, “I’m 38, I’m old. I’m old, but I’m healthier. I think I’ve actually brought my biological age down a bit.”

Despite the delay, things are moving forward. Pattinson has confirmed that principal photography for The Batman: Part II is set to begin at the end of 2025. That gives Matt Reeves the breathing room he needs to fine-tune the script and deliver another grounded, noir-style Batman story that expands on the gritty world introduced in the 2022 film.

Meanwhile, Gunn also mentioned that the script for the DCU’s upcoming Wonder Woman movie is currently in the works. While details on that film remain under wraps, it’s a signal that DC Studios is pressing forward on multiple fronts, even as it balances legacy titles like Reeves’ Batman series with its broader reboot plans.

With Reeves focused on delivering a strong follow-up and Gunn supporting the creative process, The Batman: Part II is shaping up to be worth the wait. Fans can expect more updates soon as the script comes in and production gears up for late next year.
