TPCC official spokesperson Sama Ram Mohan Reddy has accused Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader and former IPS officer RS Praveen Kumar of resorting to mudslinging against the State government regarding Gurukul institutions in an attempt to conceal financial irregularities committed during his tenure as Secretary of the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TGSWREIS).
Alleging that the former secretary had diverted funds meant for the welfare of students studying in social welfare institutions, Mr. Reddy demanded that the government order a vigilance probe into these allegations.
Addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan on Tuesday, the chairman of the TPCC Media and Communications wing claimed that he was merely disclosing observations made in a Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) report.
Mr. Reddy claimed that ₹4 crore was spent on teaching coding to students of Gurukul institutions during Mr. Praveen Kumar’s tenure, questioning how teaching coding to just 240 students could cost ₹4 crore. “It is to be noted that e-tenders were not called for the institutions to teach coding,” he said, adding that there was no approval either from the Finance department.
The Congress leader noted that the government is now offering coding classes to 1.2 lakh students free of cost. He further alleged that ₹20 crore was spent on online coaching for IIT/JEE exams without permission from the Finance department, and that tenders for this coaching were also not called.
Accusing Mr. Praveen Kumar of misusing funds earmarked for summer coaching camps, uniforms and blankets for students, the TPCC leader claimed that social welfare institutions had never recorded 100% admissions in the last 11 years.
