Donald Trump announced on Saturday that former Housing and Urban Development (HUD) secretary Ben Carson will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

The news came during remarks at an event hosted by the American Cornerstone Institute, an organization founded by Carson.

Trump praised Carson while revealing the decision, noting that the award is the civilian equivalent of the Medal of Honor, which is the highest military distinction. He emphasized the importance of the recognition, calling it the ultimate civilian award bestowed by the United States.

“We are going to be presenting Dr. Ben Carson with the highest civilian award and honor in our country. It’s the civilian version of the Medal of Honor, which is our highest military award. It’s the Presidential Medal of Freedom,” Trump said at the event. He then turned to Carson, surprising him with the announcement. “Congratulations, Ben. He didn’t know this. He didn’t know it. I hope he’s happy.”

The former neurosurgeon, who once ran against Trump for the GOP presidential nomination in 2016, later joined Trump’s cabinet as HUD secretary, serving throughout his first term. Carson was also active in Trump’s 2024 campaign as the national faith chair, strengthening his long-standing ties with the former president.

Trump said he intends to host a formal ceremony at the White House to present the medal but did not provide an exact date.

This is the latest in a series of high-profile Medal of Freedom announcements by Trump. Earlier this month, he pledged to award the honor posthumously to conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot during an open-air event at Utah Valley University on September 10. Trump also shared plans to recognize former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a longtime political ally, with the medal after Giuliani was seriously injured in a car crash.

By choosing Carson, Trump highlighted not only his former cabinet member’s service but also his career achievements as a groundbreaking neurosurgeon and political figure. The recognition cements Carson’s place among other Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients, underscoring his lasting influence in public service and conservative politics.
