Former Vice President Kamala Harris will lose her Secret Service protection beginning September 1 after President Donald Trump ordered an early termination of her extended security coverage, a White House official confirmed Friday.
By law, former vice presidents are entitled to six months of Secret Service protection following their departure from office. In Harris’ case, her coverage was extended to January 2026 by then-President Joe Biden, a move he authorized before leaving office earlier this year. That extension has now been cut short.
The change comes as Harris prepares for a 15-city promotional tour in September for her upcoming memoir, 107 Days, which recounts her brief run as the Democratic presidential nominee in 2024. Harris secured the nomination after Biden dropped out of the race following a disastrous debate against Trump, but she ultimately lost to Trump in November.
According to a letter sent to Harris and dated Thursday, the withdrawal of protection will take effect at the beginning of September. CNN first reported the details of the decision.
Kirsten Allen, a senior adviser to Harris, issued a measured response, stating: “The vice president is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.”
The move has triggered backlash among Democrats. U.S. Senator Adam Schiff of California, a frequent Trump critic, denounced the decision, calling it “another dangerous reminder that there’s no agenda more important to Donald Trump than retribution.”
Harris recently announced she will not pursue the governorship of California in 2026, shifting her political focus away from elected office for now.
This is not the first time Trump has revoked federally funded security. Earlier this year, he also ended protection for Hunter Biden and Ashley Biden, the children of former President Joe Biden. In a similar move, he stripped former national security adviser John Bolton of security coverage after Bolton became a vocal critic of him.
The decision comes at a politically sensitive moment, raising concerns about Harris’ safety as she returns to the public stage with a high-profile book release. Whether Trump’s move will spark legal challenges or further congressional scrutiny remains to be seen, but it is already adding fuel to partisan battles over security, power, and political retribution.
