Two persons were killed, and three others injured after the car they were travelling in rammed a tree at Kachirapattu village near Chengam town here.
The police identified the deceased as K. Ramki, 30, and V. Tirupathi, 40, and the injured persons as S. Navraz, 40, B. Ganesh Perumal, 35, and N. Sameeth, 42. They belong to Tiruvannamalai.
An inquiry revealed that the five were enrolled at a de-addiction and rehabilitation centre in Vettavalam village near Tiruvannamalai town. As part of a rehabilitation programme, the centre arranged a trip for its members to visit villages in the Chetpet region and spread awareness on the ill-effects of alcohol and drugs.
While returning from the programme, Ramki, who was driving, lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree on Chengam Main Road. In the impact, Ramki and Thirupathi died on the spot, while the others were grievously injured.
Passers-by and other motorists rescued the injured persons and alerted Thatchampattu police. They were admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Tiruvannamalai town. A probe is under way.
