Superintendent of Police V. Harshavardhan Reddy inspecting the Indira Priyadarshini Vegetable Market in Tirupati.

The Indira Priyadarshini Vegetable Market in the heart of Tirupati got solar-powered CCTV system on Sunday, after complaints of rampant drug abuse in public view in its vicinity.

The development came in the wake of a video that started circulating on various social media platforms, wherein three youths resorted to injecting a ‘substance’ in the backyard of the huge market premises, owned and maintained by the Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT).

After it assumed political overtones, showing the incumbent government in poor light, claims and counter claims were made by the rival parties that it was an old video and taken somewhere else.

After the vendors in the market made complaints of outsiders gaining illegal access into the market and misusing the premises, Superintendent of Police V. Harshavardhan Raju visited the spot on Saturday evening and ordered installation of CCTV cameras at five strategic locations.

The department also appealed to the public to dial ‘112’ to alert the department of any anti-social activities happening in their vicinity.
