A section of villagers opposing the proposed greenfield airport at Parandur in Kancheepuram district met Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay at the party headquarters in Panaiyur on Friday. Subramaniam, president of the Parandur greenfield airport opposition movement, said the villagers met Mr. Vijay to thank him for his continued support. “He said he would stand by the protesters until the State government withdraws the greenfield airport project. We also submitted a memorandum detailing our objections to the project.” He said that it was only after Mr. Vijay’s visit to Parandur that the issue gained “national prominence.” For more than 1,000 days, residents of nearly 13 villages have been opposing the proposed project in Parandur, 70 km from Chennai. On January 20, the TVK leader visited Parandur and addressed the villagers. He launched a sharp criticism of the ruling DMK government, accusing it of “staging a drama”.
