Wednesday Addams never disappoints with an exit that leaves viewers yearning for more.
Netflix’s gothic supernatural drama Wednesday ended Season 2 on a high note with a finale full of surprising revelations, emotional family scenes, and some new mysteries. With Season 3 already greenlit by Netflix, the finale provides fans with enough to theorize about.
The final scenes find Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday driving off into the sunset on Uncle Fester’s sidecar, but she is leaving behind a path of storylines left hanging – from her cryptic Aunt Ophelia to her best friend Enid’s dark metamorphosis. This is how Season 2’s finale lays the groundwork for an even darker third season.
How Wednesday Beat The Night Family
The climax of the finale is centered around Tyler’s mother Francoise (Frances O’Connor) and uncle Isaac (Owen Painter), who attempt to divest Tyler of his Hyde persona against his will. Their nefarious scheme involves the electric abilities of Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez), which would kill him as a similar scheme attempted nearly killed Gomez decades before.
With Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) by her side, Wednesday foils the plan. Pugsley is rescued, Tyler is released, and Isaac perishes in a blaze of flames – although the fans know that in this universe, “dead” doesn’t necessarily mean bye-bye forever. In one of Wednesday’s more dramatic reveals, she discovers that Thing, the favored disembodied hand, was originally Isaac’s hacked-off hand, severed years before by Morticia. When Isaac attempts to take it back, Thing decides family and eventually saves Wednesday’s life.
The fight unites the Addams family more than ever before. Wednesday and Morticia make amends, Pugsley finds confidence in his position in the family, and Morticia at last gives her daughter a connection to her psychic heritage in Aunt Ophelia’s diary.
Aunt Ophelia’s Dark Return
Maybe the most shocking revelation is the fact that Aunt Ophelia, presumed dead all these years, turns out to be alive. Wednesday has a haunting vision in which she finds Ophelia imprisoned in Hester’s house, crowned with flowers, and writing “Wednesday must die” on the walls.
Why does she need her niece killed? Why has Hester kept her in hiding? And who will be this long-lost Addams in Season 3? Co-creator Miles Millar hinted that Ophelia’s return will “hit this family like a bomb,” indicating her story will be at the center of the upcoming season.
Enid’s Perilous Transfiguration
Perhaps the most poignant plot twist in the finale is what happens to Wednesday’s faithful roommate Enid (Emma Myers). Learning she’s an alpha werewolf, Enid discovers that shifting during a full moon might confine her in wolf form forever. She struggles to hold back but shifts when Wednesday is buried alive. Only then does Enid’s true nature finally come through.
By the episode’s end, Enid has fled into the woods in full werewolf form. Wednesday vows to find her, setting up one of the main Season 3 storylines. As Millar hinted, fans should be “very worried” for Enid’s future.
Tyler And Capri’s Mysterious Pact
As Isaac and Francoise come to their demise, Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan) is left alive. At the closing seconds of the finale, he’s intercepted by werewolf teacher Isadora Capri (Billie Piper), who discloses her Hyde lineage and provides Tyler with sanctuary. The two hit the road together, which leaves the impression that they will be inextricably linked in Season 3.
Whether Capri means well or has ulterior motives isn’t clear yet, but Tyler’s stormy path guarantees he will be one of the show’s most volatile players.
What Season 3 Might Have in Store
From Ophelia’s shocking disclosure, Enid’s perilous destiny, to Tyler’s problematic partnership with Capri, Season 3 is sure to take Wednesday Addams to darker, richer places. Although no launch date has been announced, viewers can anticipate the Addams family soap opera, gothic horror, and dark humor to keep on going full steam.
With the finale’s numerous cliffhangers, this much is clear: Wednesday’s next chapter will be the series’ darkest yet.
