Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on Monday, ending a journey which started fourteen years ago in West Indies.
Kohli made his Test debut under MS Dhoni’s captaincy in the first fixture of a three-match series in the West Indies in 2011.
The then 23-year-old Kohli walked in at 64/3 after India won the toss and elected to bat first at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica. He hit a four on the sixth ball he faced as West Indies pacer Fidel Edwards bowled one down the leg side.
However, Kohli’s debut innings didn’t last long as Edwards had the Indian caught behind by wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh.
Kohli scored 15 runs in the second innings before dismissed by the same bowler in the same fashion.
India won the Test match by 63 runs and went on to clinch the series 1-0.
Kohli finished his Test career with 9230 runs, including 30 centuries, in 123 matches at an average of 46.85. He also led the country in 68 Tests, most by an Indian, losing just 17 (25 per cent) of them.
