Netflix’s new political thriller Hostage has captivated viewers with its dark, twisty narrative of power, betrayal, and survival.
The limited series, which launched on August 21, 2025, tracks British Prime Minister Abigail Dalton (Suranne Jones) as her world is turned upside down: her husband, Dr. Alex Anderson (Ashley Thomas), is taken captive in a scheme to make her resign.
The six-episode miniseries weaves political suspense with personal danger, opposing Dalton against foes both foreign and domestic. By the final episode, the narrative threads together a generals-and-allies-and-old-grievances conspiracy, along the way managing to provide both sorrow and optimism.
Here’s a summary of how Hostage concludes, who was really behind the kidnapping, and what it portends for Dalton’s future.
Who kidnapped the Prime Minister’s spouse?
The last episodes of the series show that the senior military officer General Livingston (Mark Lewis Jones) planned the kidnapping of Dr. Anderson and his colleagues in French Guiana. His reasons were political: Dalton’s choice to cut military spending to the bone left his troops underfunded. By destabilizing her rule through terrorist attacks and kidnappings, he wanted to have her removed and replaced by a more sympathetic leader who would reinstate military spending.
But the conspiracy goes deeper. Captain John Michael Shagan (Martin McCann), Livingston’s second-in-command, has a personal grudge. Several years ago, Dalton had a hasty withdrawal of British soldiers from Belize. The retreat exposed Shagan’s pregnant fiancée – a local translator who was guaranteed protection – and she was murdered by Guatemalan soldiers. His personal anger and loss compelled him to assist Livingston in carrying out the plan against Dalton.
What happens to Sylvie Anderson?
Dalton’s teenage daughter Sylvie (Isobel Akuwudike) finds herself at the heart of the climactic showdown. When Shagan and his corporal Saskia (Sophie Robertson) infiltrate the family’s safe house, Sylvie seizes a gun. Her parents beg her not to shoot, but Shagan provokes her by revealing he ordered the death of her grandfather.
Sylvie finally pulls the trigger, killing Shagan with a fatal shot. Police burst in shortly after, pinning her to the floor, and the viewer is left questioning whether or not she will be charged criminally. The finale, though, cuts ahead three months, with Sylvie at home with her mother, indicating that she did not go to prison but will be traumatized by what she has done.
The president’s fate
French President Vivienne Toussaint (Julie Delpy) – first a nemesis, then an ally – is killed off in the penultimate episode in a dramatic and sudden way. A bomb concealed in Saskia’s laptop detonates within Downing Street after being delivered to her by her ex-lover and stepson Matheo (Corey Mylchreest). Knowing what is coming her way, Toussaint thwarts Matheo from danger but can’t save herself.
Her death solidifies her legacy as a leader who recovered her voice, leaving her overbearing husband and vowing integrity to her people. Dalton subsequently honors Toussaint by displaying her portrait at Downing Street and referencing her last speech in her own address.
What becomes of Prime Minister Abigail Dalton?
Dalton weathered political treachery and personal loss. With Livingston outed and arrested, she reclaim her office from caretaker Prime Minister Dan Ogilvy (Pip Carter). At the end of the finale, Dalton gives a stirring speech, vowing integrity and transparency, and demanding a general election to resolve the crises surrounding her tenure in office, such as drug shortages and political turmoil.
Her family is with her, marked but alive, symbolizing survival and rebirth.
What becomes of Dr. Alex Anderson?
Alex’s destiny seems bleak in the climax. During the fight with Shagan, he is stabbed while defending his family. He later survives, thanks to Dalton and Sylvie, as the family starts to recover from their experience.
Will there be season 2 of Hostage?
Netflix charged Hostage as a limited series, so its second season is unlikely. Yet, showrunner Matt Charman hinted there is potential to delve further into Sylvie’s trauma down the line. “If you’re in a position where you do something that makes you cross a line as a human being, those ripples never cease,” he explained to Radio Times in August 2025.
For the time being, Hostage concludes as a standalone tale: a story of political corruption, individual sacrifice, and the strength of one family amidst an international whirlwind.
